Chait, Andrej Sali, Michael P. Rout DOI: 10.1371/journal.pbio.0020380 In PLoS Biology, volume 2, issue 12. In Materials and Methods, the sentence “The magnetic beads were added to the extract to a ratio of about 8 ×10 beads per g of cells” contains an error. The correct amount of beads is 8 × 10, i.e., ten times less. This correction note may be found online at DOI: 10.1371/journal.pbio.0030080. Can we still hear the Cro-magnon man?
This paper is an essay to connect with the stone Age coastal hunters who sheltered 28,000 years ago in the caves of today's italian Mediterranean sea shore cliffs. We have focused on the archaeological Gravettian layer in the Cavillon cave from Grimaldi occupied by Cro Magnons (informal name for Anatomically Modern Humans of the European Upper Paleolithic), which demonstrates the technical skil...
متن کاملThe Upper Paleolithic Revolution
■ Abstract The transition from the Middle Paleolithic to the Upper Paleolithic is considered one of the major revolutions in the prehistory of humankind. Explanations of the observable archaeological phenomena in Eurasia, or the lack of such evidence in other regions, include biological arguments (the role of Cro-Magnons and the demise of the Neanderthals), as well as cultural-technological, an...
متن کاملEarly man, late journalists
Science writers generally have it pretty easy. News usually doesn’t come as a surprise. A new finding is typically published in a journal, which reporters get in advance, or announced at a meeting. Sometimes, scientists simply too excited to wait even call a news conference. But every now and then, a bit of news slips out unannounced, and science writers are hung out to dry. That happened on Fr...
متن کاملA 28,000 Years Old Cro-Magnon mtDNA Sequence Differs from All Potentially Contaminating Modern Sequences
BACKGROUND DNA sequences from ancient specimens may in fact result from undetected contamination of the ancient specimens by modern DNA, and the problem is particularly challenging in studies of human fossils. Doubts on the authenticity of the available sequences have so far hampered genetic comparisons between anatomically archaic (Neandertal) and early modern (Cro-Magnoid) Europeans. METHOD...
متن کاملThoughts from a Psychologist By Julia A . Sherman
Clinical psychologists don’t often venture into the world of paleoanthropology, but the hypothesis that bipolar disorder evolved as an adaptation to Pleistocene climatic conditions, landed me in this fascinating and contentious arena. Bipolar disorder is correlated with a cold adapted build, and its symptoms are consistent with seasonal adaptation. For example, symptoms of major depression, suc...
